Captain Picks and Tips - Gameweek 15

10:39am Dec 9 2016

Star attackers from Arsenal and Chelsea are likely to be the red-hot picks for Gameweek 15, but who will be your Fantasy Premier League captain this weekend?

Good day to all Fantasy Premier League managers and welcome to our Gameweek 15 Captain Picks and Tips article, where many of you will be on a hunting missing to source the best, alternative captaincy selections in place of the suspended Sergio Aguero.

There will be a slight change to proceedings this week as we’ve decided to ditch the Captain Gamble for one week only. Instead, there will be four solid captaincy picks, posted in order of preference.

This is because we will be discussing 2 fixtures for the players in this article – due to the midweek Gameweek 16 schedule next week in addition to this weekend’s Gameweek 15 fixtures.

Gameweek 14’s Captaincy Picks article produced a grand total of 7 goals, 1 assist, 7 bonus points and 51 FPL points, in what turned out to be a very high scoring Premier League gameweek, filled with highs and lows with managers crashing way over the 100-point line.

This was largely helped by Alexis Sanchez’s wonderful hat-trick in Arsenal’s 5-1 win over West Ham, which saw the Chilean bag 23 points (46 as captain) so, huge congratulations to those Fantasy Premier League managers who opted to award him their Gameweek 14 captains armband.

It was very close to another clean sweep for the article, with 4 of the 5 picks (Kane, Ibrahimovic, Origi and Sanchez) finding the back of the net – it was Alvaro Negredo who let us down for this by firing a blank against Hull, managing only 1 shot on target.

For the first time this season, the same player from the earlier gameweek will feature in my following weeks selections – I’d be a fool to follow the FFP rule-book and exclude Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez from my Gameweek 15 picks, so let’s kick things off with FPL’s golden boy.

Pick 1

Alexis Sanchez – Arsenal

  • £11.6m
  • 31.%
  • 23
  • Stoke City (H)

Sanchez arguably put in his best performance for the Gunners on Saturday with a spectacular 14 minute hat-trick at the London Stadium, as Arsenal cruised to a 1-5 away win to West Ham.

One Arsenal fan on Twitter insisted after his spectacular performance that “Sanchez should be given the keys to Buckingham Palace and the Queen would have to go, if Sanchez asked for it on contract negotiations.” – All hail King Alexis.

A slight overreaction perhaps but Arsenal will need to tie up Alexis’s future shortly, especially as rumours are circulating in the tabloids (what they say is gospel) and on social media, that Pep Guardiola has personally phoned Sanchez to try to persuade him to sign for Manchester City if Arsenal refused to match his agents wage request – For Arsenal’s sake, I hope this is just paper talk, which it most likely is.

Sanchez is now FPL’s highest scoring player with 110 points after just 14 games and was the first to get to triple-digits this season and now has an impressive tally of 110 points. Despite been played as a striker, he’s listed as a midfielder on FPL and is the most popular OOP (out of position) player in the FPL game.

If Sanchez was listed as a striker, he would be the most likely replacement for the suspended Sergio Aguero – but, as the saying goes – life is never simple, is it?

Arsenal face Stoke City at the Emirates on Saturday and the visitors have a horrid record there. The Potters haven’t earned a single point in EIGHT visits to the Emirates – surely this has to end at some point? I can’t see it been this weekend though I’m afraid.

Arsenal have been extremely consistent in the league this season and will be boosted by their 4-1 away win at Basel in their midweek Champions League game. This victory ensured they topped their group for the first time since 2011/12 – let’s hope their efforts are rewarded with a favourable draw in the next round.

After facing Stoke this weekend, the Gunners face a tricky away trip to Everton on Tuesday night for Gameweek 16. Having said that, Arsenal have a great record at Goodison Park and have lost just twice in their last 10 visits.

Sanchez has 11 goals, 5 assists, 14 bonus points and 110 FPL points to his name this season – amazing statistics! You are almost guaranteed points when captaining the Chilean and is proving to be fixture-proof.

Having been transferred in to over 270,000 teams for this gameweek and it’s easy to see why given his recent form. He is also leagues ahead in our Captaincy Poll for Gameweek 15 – all aboard the Sanchez Express?

It’s worth pointing out that Sanchez doesn’t have the best record in either of these fixtures. He has scored only twice against Stoke in the league and has never found the back of the net against Everton.

I have a feeling he will rectify these slightly off-putting statistics over his next 2 matches and bring Fantasy Premier League managers who own him, a special early Christmas treat.

Pick 2

Eden Hazard – Chelsea FC

  • £10.4m
  • 37.0%
  • 9
  • West Brom (H)

Next up at number 2 in this week’s Fantasy Premier League Captain Picks is the red-hot Chelsea midfielder, Eden Hazard.

Hazard has been on fire this season and is producing the kind of form from the 2014/15 season after a miserable campaign last season. Hazard has 8 goals and is one of the highest scoring FPL players this season with 97 points to his name and doesn’t look like slowing down anytime soon.

The Belgian, in my opinion, is worth every penny of his £10.4m price-tag and I’m sure he will continue to increase both his goal scoring and FPL points tallies imminently – especially with Chelsea’s very favourable upcoming fixtures.

The Blues face an in-form West Brom at Stamford Bridge this weekend, before a midweek visit to another inform team, Sunderland (yes, you read that correctly…) Having said that, whilst both teams are performing well and churning out some results, they’re no match for Conte’s men who look unstoppable this season.

Hazard has 3 league goals against West Brom and has found the back of the net twice against Sunderland – I think this tally will increase this week as Chelsea look set to brush both teams aside in Gameweek’s 15 and 16 respectively.

With Diego Costa in scintillating form and avoiding that 5th yellow card like the Artful Dodger, Hazard has an increased chance of earning assist points, and with Chelsea proving water-tight in defence, he’s also racking up some clean-sheet points.

As title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City losing at the weekend, Chelsea will be hopeful of getting back-to-back wins this week to keep up their lead at the top of the Barclays Premier League table, with Eden Hazard likely to be amongst the thick of it.

Pick 3

Callum Wilson – Bournemouth

  • £6.4m
  • 3.1%
  • 6
  • Burnley (A)

Tempted to go against the grain for Gameweek 15 and opt for a less obvious captain for your FPL team this weekend? If so, you might be keen to explore Pick number 3 – Callum Wilson (£6.4m)

Wilson has 5 goals so far this season and has scored in his last 2 Premier League outings. Although both goals were penalties against Arsenal and Liverpool, his most recent goal in Bournemouth’s thrilling comeback to beat Liverpool 4-3 in what was the game of the season so far.

Bournemouth look to have plenty of goals in them and could grab a few more with a game away at Burnley on Saturday before a midweek match at home to Champions Leicester in Gameweek 16, who are still win-less on the road this season and look to be crumbling.

Wilson also has penalty responsibilities for the Cherries and usually puts them away when rewarded. If Bournemouth do earn a spot kick, then Wilson has added chances of being in the goal-scoring mix, which is a vital attribute to consider when selecting your Fantasy Premier League captain.

Pick 4

Jermain Defoe – Sunderland

  • £7.7m
  • 23.4%
  • 9
  • Swansea (A)

Our final captaincy pick for this article is another cheap striker, but has the form of a premium pick from a top 4 club – Sunderland striker, Jermain Defoe.

What a season Defoe is having for Sunderland – he has scored 57% of the Black Cats’ goals in the Premier League this season and without the Englishman, there’s no doubt that Sunderland would be in a very perilous position and fighting for survival.

Defoe is the top scoring English player in the Premier League this season with 8 goals to date, so surely Gareth Southgate will be keeping a close eye on his form ahead of the next England squad selection process. If Defoe carries on his goal-scoring exploits, he’d be extremely unlucky to miss out on a place in the England squad.

Sunderland have picked up recently, with 3 wins from their last 4 league matches. Sunderland will be confident of adding to this with a very winnable game against an out of form Swansea City on Saturday. This game is massive for both teams – an away win would be much welcome for Sunderland and would leave Swansea with an uphill task to keep their Premier League status.

Sunderland, especially, could do with 3 points as they face a very tricky home game in midweek against league leaders Chelsea. Defoe would do well to score in this game against the best defence in the league at present, but I wouldn’t bet against him given the form he’s in.

An added bonus for anyone thinking of transferring Defoe into their teams for Gameweek’s 15 and 16 – the last time that Defoe faced Swansea at the Liberty Stadium, he hit a fabulous hat-trick in a thrilling 4-2 victory for Sunderland.

Surely lightning can’t strike twice? I wouldn’t be surprised if Defoe proved this wrong and hit another on Saturday.
