Fantasy Premier League differentials to help make your fantasy that little bit different for Gameweek 1

Good day to all Fantasy Premier League managers around the world and welcome to a new weekly feature article, which we’ll be writing exclusively for the Fantasy Football Pundits called – ‘Punts of the Week’

My name is Simon and I’m the Chief Editor over at FPL Connect – a small bunch of hard-working, dedicated people, who share an intense passion for Fantasy Premier League and want to share our insight and advice with the FPL community.

Each week, I’ll be scouring the stats and FPL website to bring you 3 players with an ownership of around 5 to 10%, in the hope of providing you with some top FPL punts to get the jump on your rivals.

If you’d like to offer any feedback on this article or simply continue the discussion, then please drop us a follow on Twitter – @FPL_Connect

Steve Mounie – Huddersfield [£6.0m, 0.6%]

With the uncertainty surrounding players like Charlie Austin (Gabbiadini), Jay Rodriguez (injury prone?) and Dwight Gayle (rotation) for our 3rd striker slots, Steve Mounie at £6.0m has never looked so good.

Currently being overlooked by most at just 0.6% ownership, Mounie could be the perfect answer to our 3rd striker problems and looks a great differential option for Huddersfield’s Gameweek 1 fixture at Crystal Palace.

Mounie has started most of Huddersfield’s pre-season matches and has scored an impressive 4 goals in this time.

Looking hungry and sharp, he’ll be eyeing up Frank de Boer’s new-look Palace side, thinking he can take advantage of a team in a period of transition – adjusting to a new manager and a completely different system and philosophy.

Coming over from an adequate Montpellier side in the French top flight with an impressive 14 goals and 3 assists, he has all the attributes to adapt to the Premier league.

With Huddersfield’s kind opening fixtures against Crystal Palace (a), Newcastle (h) and Southampton (h), are you going to overlook this potential hidden gem?

James Ward-Prowse – Southampton [£5.5m, 2.2%]

Another team with a favourable Gameweek 1 fixture is Mauricio Pellegrino’s Southampton.

The Saints host Swansea at St. Mary’s on Saturday and whilst they’ve not looked impressive in pre-season (a huge 4-0 loss to German outfit Augsburg being one example) – their last pre-season game looked to be their full strength eleven.

Southampton comfortably dispatched a strong Sevilla side, winning 2-0, with goals from Stephens and Gabbiadini.

One player that stands out for value in the Saints side is James Ward-Prowse (JWP).

At just £5.5m, he has the responsibility of both corners and indirect free kicks – including some direct free kicks. He could provide excellent value for FPL managers in this price bracket, especially given his set-piece duties.

With an incredibly low and almost criminal ownership of just 2.2%, his incredibly accurate dead-ball deliveries could become a fantastic source of points for those FPL bosses that decide to take a punt on him.

With JWP appearing to have cemented his place on the right-hand side of Pellegrino’s 4-2-3-1 system, it’s difficult to make a case against him.

Jamie Vardy – Leicester [£8.5m, 3.9%]

Another team that haven’t particularly impressed in pre-season is Leicester City, yet I fancy them to upset the apple cart in their Gameweek 1 fixture against Arsenal at the Emirates.

It’s just the kind of fixture that Leicester like to play – sitting back like a coiled snake, allowing the other team to feel like they’re in control – all the while preparing the perfect moment to strike on the counter and when they strike, it’s normally party animal Jamie Vardy who lands the spoils.

Currently sitting in just 3.9% of teams, he could prove to be an enticing differential over the likes of Everton’s Wayne Rooney [£7.5m] and West Ham’s Javier Hernandez [£7.5m].

Priced favourably at £8.5m, his ugly fixture against Arsenal at the Emirates on paper, could provide the perfect cover for a punt.

With a brace in his final pre-season game vs Borussia Monchengladbach where Leicester won 2-1, Vardy looks ready to kick off the season with a bang.

It might not look the most logical choice and you may have something to say against it, but, you know what Vardy says to that – can you afford to get banged?
