Top 5 Fantasy Premier League Captain Trends for Gameweek 21, as voted for by you, the FPL Community

In a week that sees the FPL’s most expensive player, Sergio Aguero (£12.8m) fall OUT of the top 5 captaincy picks for Gameweek 21, is now the time to stick the armband on the Argentinian? Some might says he’s a differential, with a 21.6% ownership, now could be the perfect time to capitalise…

Not surprisingly, Arsenal’s star-player, Alexis Sanchez, tops our Gameweek 21 Captains Poll with a clear majority of the votes, but will Olivier Giroud continue to start up front in Wenger’s starting XI and saturate Sanchez’s returns?

5. Diego Costa – Chelsea (lei)

With around 7% of the vote, Diego Costa finds himself in 5th place in the FFPundits captaincy poll as Chelsea travel to face a Leicester side that have managed just 1 win in their last 5 games, conceding 5 goals in the process.

The Chelsea striker remains the current top goal scorer in the Premier League with 14 goals in 19 appearances.

In the last 4 Gameweeks, Costa has managed 2 goals from 4 shots on target, despite missing a game through suspension.

4. Olivier Giroud – Arsenal (swa)

Olivier Giroud has received around 8% of the vote, placing him in 4th place in the poll. Arsenal face a Swansea side that sit in 19th place in the league table. Their win against Crystal Palace last Gameweek is their only win from the last 5 Premier League games and the Welsh side have conceded 14 goals over that period; no team in the league have conceded more.

The French forward has forced his way back into the starting lineup, with important goals in each of his last 3 Premier League games.

In the last 3 Gameweeks, Giroud’s 6 shots on target can be beaten only by Ibrahimovic, Sturridge and Sanchez (7).

3. Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Man Utd (LIV)

In 3rd place, with around 8% of the vote, it’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic, as Man Utd host Liverpool. Jürgen Klopp’s side have done fairly well of late, with 4 wins in their last 5 Premier League games, conceding just 3 times over that period. However, 2 of those goals came last Gameweek, when the reds dropped points against Sunderland.

The big Swede missed out through illness midweek, for Man Utd’s cup fixture against Hull, but is expected to return for the weekend.

Ibrahimovic has managed 9 shots on target during the last 4 Gameweeks, which is more than any other player in the league. In the same period, the 10 attempted assists managed by the Man Utd man is more than any other forward.

2. Dele Alli – Spurs (WBA)

With around 11% of the vote, Dele Alli is in 2nd place, ahead of his home fixture against West Brom. The Baggies are having a good season, and sit in 8th place in the league table.

They have, however, been unusually poor defensively, having kept just 3 clean sheets this season and they’ve failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last 8 Premier League games.

The Spurs midfielder has now scored 7 goals in his last 4 Premier League games, after his brace against Chelsea last Gameweek.

In the same period, only Zlatan Ibrahimovic (9) can beat Alli’s 8 shots on target and the 12 shots from inside the area managed by the Spurs man is 2nd only to Alexis Sanchez (13).

1. Alexis Sanchez – Arsenal (swa)

Leading the captaincy poll, with a huge 42% of the vote, is Alexis Sanchez. Arsenal travel to face a struggling Swansea in Gameweek 21.

The Chilean attacker has recently moved back into midfield in order to accommodate Oliver Giroud in the starting lineup. However, his numbers have still been very strong.

In the last 3 games, where Giroud has played from the start each time, Sanchez has produced 7 shots on target and 10 attempted assists.

In the same period, only Ibrahimovic and Sturridge can match Sanchez for shots on target and no player in the league has managed more. Only Eriksen (12), Snodgrass (11) and Payet (11) have produced more attempted assists than the Arsenal midfielder, during that period.
