@FPLSecrets analyse potential defensive options for the rest of the season and make their picks for the upcoming blank and double gameweeks
After 28,260 minutes of Premier League action, the end is in sight. There are just 6 Gameweeks left of the 2017-18 season, and with Double Gameweeks approaching (Gameweek 34 and Gameweek 37), as well as a Blank Gameweek 35, there is plenty for FPL bosses to navigate until mid-May.
Unsurprisingly, most FPL managers will be focused on their attacking options heading into the final stretch of the season.
With back-lines potentially overlooked, this provides an opportunity for FPL managers to steal a march on their rivals.
This article analyses potential Defensive options for the rest of the season and we hope you find it useful when planing for the remaining weeks of the FPL season.
Which teams keep the most clean sheets?
Manchester United top the clean sheet charts this season (16, 11 at home), closely followed by Man City (15, 6 at home), Chelsea (14, 9 at home) and Tottenham (14, 8 at home).
All of these teams bar Man City play twice in Gameweek 34 – outside of the usual European contenders, Burnley stand out with 11 clean sheets (6 at home); they have a Double Gameweek in week 34 and do not blank in Gameweek 35.
Bournemouth – although they have a confirmed Double Gameweek in week 34 – they face Liverpool and Manchester United.
Southampton – similar rational applies and their Double Gameweek opponents in Gameweek 34 are Chelsea and Leicester.
Which Defenders provide the most goals and assists?
Ben Davies (£5.9m, 23% ownership), is involved in a goal or assist more often than any other Defender in the Premier League relative to minutes played.
The Welshman has scored 2 goals and provided 7 assists this season, starting 9 of Spurs’ last 10 Premier League matches. Spurs play both Man City and Brighton in Gameweek 34.
Andy Robertson (£5m, 8% ownership), has provided 4 assists this season, three of which have come in his last 5 matches. Liverpool have no double game weeks upcoming, however, they do have a favourable run of fixtures until the end of the season and have no blank gameweeks.
A premium option, if you can afford it, remains Marcos Alonso (£7m, 20% ownership). Alonso has more FPL points than any other Defender and has scored 6 goals and provided 1 assist this season, with an average goal involvement of every 356 minutes played.
Chelsea play both Southampton and Burnley in Gameweek 34 and, whilst this recent FPL form hasn’t been great, we all know the potential for double-digit point-haul returns is there.
