Part TWO of our Who’s HOT and who’s NOT in the world of FPL explores those we might want to avoid for Gameweek 1

For those of you who’re reading this article having just read Part 1 – thank you for joining us again and we hope you’re enjoying the new layout and style of this weekly piece.

As always, I wish all Fantasy Premier League the very best of luck for the season ahead – here’s to continued success and plenty of green arrows in 2017/18!

Marcos Alonso – Chelsea [£7.0m]

£7.0m for a defender? Go home FPL, you’re drunk!

But seriously, it’s difficult to understand why Marcos Alonso will set you back £0.5m more than his defensive partner Gary Cahill, after Cahill outscored Alonso last season.

Sure, he’s more of an attacking threat, whilst hovering North of the half-way line or the majority of the game, but will his FPL output seriously out-class that of Luiz and Cahill? I personally don’t think so and would rather have a few quid and reinvest elsewhere.

Gameweek 1 sees Burnley visit Champions Chelsea, in what looks set to be an opening campaign win for Conte and co, as they look to defend their Premier League title.

The Clarets struggled terribly on the road in 2016/17 – picking up just one win all season – so a Chelsea defender or two for Gameweek 1 is by no means the worst idea in the world, but take Cahill, David Luiz, Azpilicueta or even Rudiger over Alonso and save yourself up to £1m to spend elsewhere.

Philippe Coutinho – Liverpool [£9.0m]

Coutinho’s future is far from certain and now he’s suffering with a bag back, apparently.

What Barcelona want, Barcelona invariably get, and you can’t help but feel that their pursuit of Liverpool’s brilliant Brazilian will rumble on right through till the end of the transfer window.

Furthermore, if Coutinho has his heart set on a move to the Spanish giants, then it remains to be seen how this will impact on his level of performance.

For that reason, I would look elsewhere for the opening few Gameweeks until the issue is resolved, one way or another.

Fortunately, there are an abundance of alternatives for the same price or cheaper. Coutinho’s new Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah is an interesting option – his pace as well as his eye for goal will make him a big hit on Merseyside and a popular figure among FPL enthusiasts as the season progresses.

Other alternatives worth exploring are Manchester City’s Leroy Sane, who had an impressive first season in the Premier League in 2016/17, and Manchester United’s Paul Pogba, who looks determined to show why he’s the world’s most expensive player after an underwhelming first season on his return to Old Trafford.

Over 25% of FPL bosses have selected Coutinho, despite the intense speculation over his future, but this is a particular bandwagon that I would suggest avoiding – for the time being at least.

Joshua King – Bournemouth [£7.5m]

The Bournemouth man was one of the bargains of the season in 2016/17, racking up 178 points.

This was mainly due to the fact that he was playing predominantly as a forward for the Cherries, despite being listed as a midfielder in FPL.

King’s position has now been adjusted and his price has risen to reflect his form of last season, which means he is now competing against a series of excellent striking options for a place in your FPL squad.

Gameweek 1 sees Bournemouth and King travel to West Brom, where they’ll be up against Tony Pulis’s notoriously well-organised defensive unit.

So, if not King, then who?

Well, West Ham’s Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez [£7.5m] brings tremendous goal-scoring pedigree from his previous spell in the Premier League at Manchester United, as does Wayne Rooney, who has returned to Everton after thirteen years at Old Trafford.

Rooney [£7.5m] is the same price as King while Chicharito is £0.5m cheaper.

For Gameweek 1, Rooney in particular looks an excellent option as Everton face Stoke at Goodison.

Meanwhile, Chicharito makes his West Ham debut at Old Trafford against his former employers.

He couldn’t…could he?
