With Tottenham’s Harry Kane absent in Gameweek 21, is Liverpool’s Bobby Firmino our go-to captaincy pick?
As the FPL Gameweek’s come thick and fast, so do the articles, so we won’t beat about this bush this week as we know your time is precious.
Last week’s Gameweek 20 Captains Picks were a clean-sweep, so here’s how we got on for those who missed them.
Pick 1: Harry Kane – 34 points.
Pick 2: Mo Salah – 18 points.
Pick 3: Raheem Sterling – 22 points
The Gamble: Jesse Lingard – 26 points.
With Harry Kane taking no part in Gameweek 21, it’s refreshing to see a Kane-less captaincy tips article, but that doesn’t make it any easier to whittle down the form picks in order of personal preference.
So, FPL bosses, without further ado, please see below my top 3 picks and captaincy gamble for your consideration ahead of Saturday’s 2pm deadline and as always, may your arrows be green.
Álvaro Morata vs. Stoke City (H)
On a warm, autumn afternoon back in Gameweek 6, Chelsea travelled North to the beautiful town of Stoke, where Alvaro Morata bagged a hat-trick and 3 bonus points, as Chelsea smashed the Potters 0-4 at the Bet365.
Since then, the Chelsea striker has yet to deliver a double-digit points-haul on FPL, however, has scored 10 goals, 4 assists and 13 bonus points in the 1264 minutes he’s played this season.
With no Harry Kane available in Gameweek 21 and Lukaku struggling for form, we’re left with slim-pickings up top, as Aguero and Jesus cannot be trusted either.
A home fixture against a Stoke side that has conceded 12 in their last 6 and kept only 2 clean-sheets all season, looks too good of an opportunity to pass up on, even though other FPL assets such as Salah and Coutinho having better recent form.
With some fantasy bosses making a hop-on, hop-off switch from Kane to Morata for Gameweek 21, I expect the Spaniard to be near the top of most captaincy polls this week and is my number 1 candidate.
Firmino vs. Leicester City (H)
In Liverpool’s last 3 Premier League outings, Klopp’s Red’s have scored 12 goals, with Firmino being involved in 50% of them – 4 goals and 2 assists.
Add to that his 8 out of a possible 9 bonus points and we have a sub-£9m striker on FPL who has delivered 3 consecutive double-digit point-hauls of 12, 11 and 13.
Now owned by 31.3% at the time of writing, the Liverpool striker has been transferred in by over 115,000 Fantasy Premier League bosses ahead of their Gameweek 21 clash with Leicester City at Anfield.
Whilst The Foxes are no pushovers, they have conceded in 9 of their last 10 Premier League outings and have kept only 1 clean-sheet on the road all season, so shouldn’t pose too much of a threat for a free-scoring Liverpool outfit.
With Salah, Coutinho and Firmino continually racking up healthy FPL returns on a weekly basis, the Brazilian is an absolute steal at just £8.9m and should be captained with confidence in Gameweek 21.
Raheem Sterling vs. Crystal Palace (A)
Raheem Sterling – The FPL gift that keeps on giving.
Like Firmino, Sterling is a sub-£9m fantasy asset who has delivered 3 consecutive double-digit point hauls of 12, 13 and 11, bagging 4 goals, 1 assist and 5 bonus points in his last 3 outings.
Each week, as paranoid FPL managers, we expect Pep to rest the England international – but oh no, he played his 8th consecutive 90-minute match in Gameweek 21 (vs. Newcastle) and once again delivered healthy returns for those who own him.
An away trip to Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace in Gameweek 21 shouldn’t deter anyone from entrusting Sterling with the captains armband, even though they’ve conceded only 4 goals in their last 4 outings (excluding Thursday night’s Arsenal game).
Wins against Watford and Leicester are unlikely to give The Eagles the confidence they need to do damage to City’s unbeaten record this season, with only 1 outcome expected come Sunday evening.
With defensive injuries a concern (Sakho, Ward and Fosu-Mensah) for Palace and City scoring 13 goals in their last 4 Premier League outings, Raheem Sterling looks set to continue his blistering form, with plenty more FPL points to come.
The Gamble Pick
Richarlison vs. Swansea City (H)
My Gameweek 20 gamble pick of the week was Jesse Lingard, so expectations are high this week to find you a captaincy differential which isn’t too much of an obvious choice.
Having started the season so well, both Richarlison and Watford FC have gone of the boil of late, but their home fixture in Gameweek 21 is far too tasty to ignore.
Delivering only 1 assist and 0 bonus points in his last 7 Premier League outings, Richarlison doesn’t really deserve to feature in our article this week, but, as Swansea have conceded 13 in their last 4 games and remained rooted to the bottom of the table, I thought I’d make an exception.
Richarlison is almost guaranteed to start each week and plays 90 minutes in most games, so with Swansea conceding goals for fun each week, this looks like a fantasy match-up made in FPL Heaven.
Owned by only 18% of overall managers and now priced at an affordable £6.5m, could Richarlison be the golden captaincy nugget you’ve been searching for this week?
