Struggling to decide on who to captain for Gameweek 1? See how other FPL managers vote in our Captains Poll
Hello and welcome back to the weekly Fantasy Football Pundits Captaincy Poll and article, where we give you, the FPL manager, an opportunity to cast your weekly captain pick anonymously, to our captaincy poll below.
With the opening Gameweek 1 deadline just around the corner, managers are already facing their first real headache of the season whilst asking themselves – “who do I captain, and why?”
Harry Kane [£12.5m], Romelu Lukaku [£11.5m] and Kevin De Bruyne [£10.0m] are likely to be shortlisted as likely captaincy candidates as we head in to Gameweek one – will most FPL bosses opting to captain a premium player, rather than gambling on a shrewd move of differential so early on.
The obvious pick for the armband, in my opinion, is Manchester United’s summer-signing, Romelu Lukaku.
The FPL heavyweight is priced at £11.5m and is currently selected by 48.4% of managers – making him the highest owned player in the Fantasy Premier League game.
Manchester United face West Ham in their opening match at Old Trafford in Sunday late afternoon Kick-off, where United will be looking to get off to a flying start in front of their home fans.
Harry Kane is another FPL heavyweight who many will be considering for the armband. The top priced player in the game at £12.5m is currently owned by 35.1% of overall FPL bosses.
Kane scored 29 goals in 30 appearances last season, assisted on 7 occasions and picked up an impressive 33 bonus points for his efforts.
The chatter surrounding Spurs’ form at home (Wembley) and his terrible past-form in August has been the talk of the FPL community since the game launched – this may have led to many FPL bosses excluding him from their Gameweek 1 squads. Error?
Kevin De Bruyne has to be the pick of the premium midfielders worth captaining in Gameweek 1 – priced kindly at £10m, the assist machine is currently in 24.2% of squads.
The full Man City team seems to flow through De Bruyne, but will the FPL points?
With the Liverpool midfield being free scoring in this pre-season and last season, it’s a captaincy minefield for FPL managers and makes my head hurt just thinking about it.
Sadio Mane [£9.5m] and Mohamed Salah [£9.0m] being the names on managers lips – both have TSB’s (teams selected by) of under 20%.
Could Liverpool midfielders offer FPL bosses offer some kind of captaincy differential as Liverpool look to catch Watford cold on the opening weekend.
The elephant in the room is Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero (ignore him at your peril) at £11.5m and under 10% TSB.
Will he be benched? Will he start alongside Jesus up top and have a goal-fest against Brighton in Gameweek 1?
Only Pep Guardiola knows the answer to that question, but is he worth the gamble?
With only pre-season form to go on, there’s not much we or any FPL account could offer you in terms of concrete stats and advice.
The only thing that I, @FPLChef would strongly advise is – open your FPL campaign with a highly owned, premium priced player, so that if they flop in Gameweek 1, the masses flop with you.
I’m looking at you, Romelu…
As always, we ask that you cast your Gameweek 1 captaincy selection to the poll below and be sure to reach out to us on Twitter with any comments or questions you might have about your teams and transfers.
NB: If you’re casting your vote via a smart phone, please tap the player’s name twice, or until they have a green mark next to the left of their name – it gets stuck sometimes!
