Liverpool FC, FC Spartak Moscow, Sevilla FC and Maribor feature in UEFA Champions League Group E
FC Spartak Moscow
Spartak Moskva, the Russian champions are the country’s most successful club having won 12 Soviet championships and another 10 in Russia. Spartak will be hoping they can use their home advantage in Russia to qualify ahead of either Sevilla or Liverpool.
Star Man – Quincy Promes [£7.0m]
When you are club’s top goal scorer in 2016/17 as a midfielder, you instantly become an option for fantasy managers.
The Dutchman scored 13 goals last season after impressive individual performances, cutting inside from wide positions and finishing clinically.
He already has 6 goals and 3 assists in 9 games so far this season, manager Massimo Carrera will be hoping he can carry his early season form into the Champions League.
One to watch – Salvatore Bocchetti [£4.5m]
The artificial pitch at the Otkrytiye Arena may have been replaced with a natural SIS pitch this summer, but it’s still a tough for any team to travel to Russia.
For that reason, I have chosen Salatore Bocchetti as one to watch who, as a cheap enabler, could also chip in with a clean sheet at home.
The Italian has already made 7 appearances this season, with Spartak keeping 2 clean sheets out of there 3 home games so far this season, conceding in the 3rd only after receiving a red card just before half-time.
Predicted Lineup: Sehic; Medvedev, Rzeniczak, Guseynov, Agolli; Garayev, Michel, Richard, Madatov, Izmailov; Ndlovu
Sevilla, the 5 time Europa League winners may have enjoyed their past success but the Champions League is where they want to be, this year they qualified via the playoffs after finishing 4th in La Liga last season.
Ever Banega returning from Inter after 13 months will be a positive for manager Eduardo Berizzo.
Star Man – Wassam Ben Yedder [£10.0m]
After scoring 18 goals last season, Frenchman Ben Yedder will be a key man for Sevilla in this season’s Champions League.
Now flanked by new signings Nolito and Jesus Navas, Ben Yedder can expect support from the ex-Manchester City duo to help them qualify for the last 16 along with group favourites Liverpool.
One to watch – Jesus Navas [£6.0m]
Signed on a free transfer from Manchester City this summer, Jesus Navas is an old-fashioned winger who will hug the touch-line and dribble past the opposition to create chances for Ben Yedder and Nolito, rather than cut inside and try to score himself.
At £6m on UCL Fantasy, he could prove to be good value.
Predicted Lineup: Rico; Mercado, Kjaer, Lenglet, Escudero; N’Zonzi, Geis, Navas, Ganso, Nolito;
Liverpool have returned to the Champions League this season at the expense of Arsenal, after finishing 4th in last season’s Premier League.
They confirmed their place in the group stage after an impressive 3 goals in 20 minutes in the 2nd leg vs Hoffenheim.
Jurgen Klopp has bags of riches when it comes to attacking players, so expect goals from this Liverpool side.
Star Man – Sadio Mane [£9.0m]
The engine room of this Liverpool attack, Mane will drive forward from midfield with pace which would cause trouble for any defence.
With 3 goals in 3 games already this season, Mane is a potential captain choice for UCL Fantasy managers.
One to Watch – Roberto Firmino [£9.0m]
Playing upfront as Liverpool’s number 9, Roberto Firmino is likely to be their top scorer throughout the UCL campaign.
Having scored 2 goals and 2 assist in just 4 Premier League fixtures this season, Bobby looks set to carry his great form in to the Champions League campaign.
There are goals in this Liverpool side, which the Brazilian will be heavily involved in along with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.
Predicted Lineup: Mignolet; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Lovren, Moreno; Henderson, Can, Wijnaldum;
Salah, Mane, Firmino.
Winners of the 2016/17 Slovenian PrvaLiga, NK Maribor are the most successful club in Slovakia having won 14 titles. Favourites to finish bottom of the group – Maribor will be hoping to cause an upset.
Star Man – Marcos Tavares [£6.0m]
Marcos Tavares finished last season with 12 goals. Established within the in the Maribor team and with their fans, Tavares has scored 125 goals for the club in 9 years.
Maribor will be relying on his goals to give them a chance of scoring points in this group.
One to watch – Jasmin Mesanovic [£6.0m]
New signing on a free transfer from Zrinjski Mostar, Bosnian forward Jasmin Mesanovic will support Marcos Tavares in providing goals to this Madibor side, after scoring 11 times in Croatia last season.
Predicted Lineup: Sehic; Handanovic; Milec, Rajcevic, Suler, Viler; Vrhovec, Ogrinec, Bajde, Marcos Tavares, Bohar; Mesanovic.
