Former Chelsea right-back could be headed to the Emirates.

Reports have emerged that Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey could soon be joining Arsenal. The 20-year old English international started the season in blistering form for Brighton and has been touted as Hector Belerrin’s replacement when the Spaniard leaves London in the summer transfer window.

Arsenal were not the only clubs linked with the prodigy after his performances in the English Premier League. Tottenham and Liverpool have been linked, and a return to Chelsea cannot be ruled out either. Other reports also suggested that Bayern Munich could also tempt Lamptey in the German Bundesliga.

A transfer of any kind would not only benefit Brighton and Hove Albion, but Chelsea would reap some significant share due to the sell-on clause in the player’s contract.

Lamptey has only been at Amex for twelve months, but his run of form at the start of the current season saw his star rise significantly. The summer transfer window could see Premier League clubs lining up for his signature, and should Mikel Arteta relax; there will be other willing suitors for the young defender.

Another setback for Lamptey

Tariq Lamptey’s progress has been hindered by an injury sustained late last year and has not featured for the Seagulls since December. He has made 19 appearances for Brighton since his move from Chelsea, with his contract running until 2025.

Lamptey missed Saturday’s game at Leicester after it was confirmed he would be proceeding to see a specialist for his nagging injury. He had just gotten back to full training with the first team and was expected to make his return at King Power. The injury comes as a setback for the player and Brighton boss Graham Potter, whose team is fighting relegation.

Speaking before the weekend clash against Leicester, Potter said: “Tariq won’t be fit, he had a little setback this week and we need to get to the bottom of that. It is a problem with his hamstring. He’s seeing a specialist and he’s not available for the weekend.”

His continued absence could be costly to Brighton in their battle against the drop. A 2-1 win away at Southampton, and Fulham losing to Manchester City, established some breathing space for the Seagulls, who now sit 3 points above the relegation places, having played a game less than Fulham at 18th. Next up, Brighton face Newcastle at the Amex on March 20 before traveling to Manchester to play second-placed Manchester United. Another tricky away tie awaits Potter’s men, this time at Stamford Bridge on April 17, a week after a home clash with European pretenders Everton.

As it stands

A win for Brighton against Newcastle will see them move four points above the Magpies and a point behind Burnley and Southampton, but will remain at 16th. Fulham occupy the 18th position on 26 points, with West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United taking the bottom two spots with 18 and 14 points respectively.
