Aston Villa players are available for an affordable price on FPL this season, but are they worthy of your investment ahead of Gameweek 1?
Aston Villa secured promotion to the Premier League after a three-year absence, overcoming West Brom and Derby in the play-offs, following their 5th place finish.
Their tally of 82 goals scored ranked ahead of 2nd placed Sheffield United (78), with only West Brom (87) and Norwich (93) faring better.
They did, however, keep the fewest clean sheets (12) amongst the 3 promoted teams, while 10 Championship sides conceded fewer goals (61).
When reviewing the bookmaker odds on Aston Villa’s chances of avoiding relegation this season, sites such as compareyourodds.com have them at around 9/4 to go down, with Brighton (15/8), Burnley (6/4), Norwich (10/11) and Sheffield United (4/6) each shorter in the market.

Defender: Ahmed El Mohamady – £4.5
31-year-old El Mohamady has FPL pedigree, having featured in 6 Premier League campaigns throughout his time at Hull City and Sunderland.
While primarily used at right-back during his 41 appearances last season, the Egyptian was stationed at right midfield on 13 occasions, highlighting some ‘Out of Position’ potential.
His total of 8 assists in the 2018/19 campaign ranked 3rd amongst Aston Villa teammates, while Derby’s Jayden Bogle (9) was the only Championship defender to produce more.
Midfielder: Jack Grealish – £6.0
Operating primarily in a 4-3-3 formation, Jack Grealish directly contributed to 13 goals (6 goals, 7 assists) from central midfield, during his 34 appearances last season.
As captain of the side, the Englishman’s starting place appears secure, though he did miss a number of games through a shin injury.
In spite of that fact, the 23-year-old ended the campaign as Villa’s most creative outlet, with his tally of 76 chances created ranking 1st amongst teammates.
When compared against the rest of the league, his average of 2.3 chances created per game could only be betted by Norwich’s Emiliano Buendia (2.4) and Leeds midfielder Pablo Hernandez (3.0), amongst players with at least 5 appearances.
Forward: Wesley Moraes – £6.0
On loan from Chelsea, Tammy Abraham was Aston Villa’s top goalscorer last season.
A total of 26 goals saw him finish as the Championship’s 2nd highest scorer, only behind Norwich forward Teemu Pukki (29).
But it looks increasingly likely that that Abraham will not be returning this season, after Villa announced the signing of 22-year-old striker Wesley Moraes from Club Brugge, for a club-record fee of around £22m.
In 28 appearances last season, the young Brazilian racked up a tally of 10 goals and 9 assists; a huge improvement on the 7 goals and 2 assists he managed in the 2017/18 campaign.
Whereas Abraham was more of an out-and-out goal scorer, Wesley looks to be more of a team player, with a big physical presence and an all-round game that could boost the FPL appeal of Villa’s other attacking options.
