The Fantasy Football Pundits explore the players which have been selected the most in this years Fantasy Premier League game

With the start of the Premier League just days away now, Fantasy Premier League managers around the world are frantically putting together their FPL teams ahead of Gameweek 1’s deadline.

For those of you who aren’t aware, or, are at risk of forgetting (we’ve all been there), the Gameweek 1 deadline is on Friday the 11th of August, at 6:45pm GMT.

Every fantasy football team needs a solid spine, but such trusted players usually come at a price – but we can’t have them all, so who do we pick?

With 1 goalkeeper, 4 defenders, 5 midfielders and 3 strikers all owned by over 20% of FPL bosses, it’s likely that many Fantasy Premier League teams will look the same.

Who you choose is down to you, of course, but, here are the current Top 5 most owned FPL players.

5. Kevin De Bruyne – Manchester City

Coming in at number 5, is Pep Guardiola’s star midfielder and Belgian international, Kevin De Bruyne.

The £10m man is now owned by 25.8% of all FPL bosses, but this figure is set to rise rapidly after having a successful pre-season on tour with the blues.

Last season, De Bruyne topped the Premier League charts with 21 assists – however, he only found the back of the net on 6 occasions, which did prove frustrating for many FPL bosses.

To add to his tally of 21 assists, De Bruyne also managed 33 bonus points and kept 11 clean-sheets.

With Pep’s new singing now settled, City are likely to use both Walker and Danilo to provide extra width, with KDB set to dominate the central attack.

With many FPL bosses expressing concern over Pep Guardiola’s likeliness to rotate his midfield, KDB, if fit, looks nailed on to start most games before the Champions League schedule arrive.

4. David De Gea – Manchester United

In at number 4 is Manchester United’s man between the sticks, David De Gea.

Priced at an affordable £5.5m, the Man United stop-stopper has caught the eye of 29.4% of FPL bosses, with this number set to rise as more users return to the Fantasy Premier League game.

In the 2016/17 Premier League season, De Gea with only the 4th highest scoring goalkeeper (136 points), making 72 saves, kept 14 clean sheets but managed only 5 bonus points.

With opening fixtures against West Ham (h), Swansea (a), Leicester (h), Stoke (a) and Everton (h) in the first gameweeks, it’s clear to see why the Spaniard is a popular choice amongst overall FPL managers.

3. Harry Kane – Spurs

Ignore him at your peril…

The Spurs striker and England International comes in at number 2 and is the top-priced player on the Fantasy Premier League game, at a staggering and almost sickening, £12.5m.

Owned by 36.5% of FPL bosses this season, the Golden Boot winner bagged 29 goals to take home the golden trophy, bagging a hat-trick on the last day of the season in a 1-7 thriller at Hull City.

Add to his tally of 29 goals, the Spurs striker also provided 7 assists for his team-mates and earned a whopping 33 bonus points along the way, leaving him with a season total of 224 points from only 2523 minutes.

Harry Kane is the 3/1 favourite with Betfair to land the Golden Boot award again this season, making his £12.5m FPL price-tag seem less daunting.

2. Dele Alli – Spurs

Flying in at number 2 in our Top 5 most owned Fantasy Premier League players list is Spurs’ midfield maestro and England international, Dele Alli.

Alli flew on the scene last season as the most stand-out performer in a Spurs shirt, netting 18 goals, 11 assists and 17 bonus points.

Only second to Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (264 points)  in the top scoring midfielder, Alli amassed a cool 225 points, putting him one point ahead of team-mate Harry Kane in the final standings.

At a cost of £9.5m, Alli’s 2017/18 price-tag puts him alongside the likes of Ozil, Mane and team-mate Christian Eriksen.

However, it’s Alli that the FPL masses have opted for this season, as his overall ownership now sits at a whopping 37.7%… and rising!

1. Romelu Lukaku – Manchester United

In at number 1, the ex-Everton and now number one front-man at Manchester United, Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgian has dominated the Fantasy Premier League Captaincy Polls throughout the pre-season, as his overall ownership continued to rocket past the 40% mark.

Now, his ownership appears to have settled around 48.7%, with his £11.5m price-tag likely to have put many FPL bosses off having him in their squads.

Last season, Lukaku found the net on 25 occasions, created 6 assists and collected 33 bonus points for his efforts.

Taking over from Zlatan Ibrahimovic, we’re likely to see Lukaku better last seasons form as Manchester United’s lone striker.

With service from the likes of Pogba, Mata, Mkhitaryan and Rashford on offer, the Belgian is likely to have enough chances in front of goal, whilst creating his own magic with his back to goal.

A powerhouse of a striker, in a Jose Mourinho team which must improve this season!
