Fantasy Premier League Captain Tips & Picks - Gameweek 17

6:36pm Dec 11 2017

Premium captaincy picks from Spurs, Liverpool and Chelsea are up for consideration ahead of FPL Gameweek 17

United at home to Bournemouth, Manchester City away to Swansea, Chelsea travel north to Huddersfield whilst Liverpool welcome West Brom to Anfield – but who will be your Gameweek 17 captain from these favourable fixtures?

Once again, the Fantasy Premier League community is about to be divided, with prime picks such as Hazard, Kane, Salah and Aguero having favourable midweek match-ups.

This weeks selections are based on my (@FFPundits_Drew) personal opinion and placed in order of personal preference, as you don’t need any FPL pundit, including myself, telling you “you should captain Kane this week.”

For example, 35% of FPL bosses who voted on our Gameweek 16 Captains Poll opted for Hazard over Kane, yet both players were selected in our Gameweek 16 Captaincy Picks and only Kane delivered healthy returns – the margins are so small people!

So, going forward, whilst we’ll continue to use stats to back-up our weekly picks up and views, when it comes to captaining Kane, Salah or Hazard on any given gameweek, your returns are the hands of the fantasy Gods.

As always fantasy bosses, I wish you all the very best of luck for the midweek Gameweek 17 schedule and hope that this weeks views and selections help offer you food for though when selecting your captain.

“I own him so I must captain him” is something we see quite often on our Twitter feed over at @FFPundits, but not something everyone here at FFP agrees with.

Well, for me, I own Harry Kane – I want to captain Harry Kane and I will captain Harry Kane against Brighton at Wembley on Wednesday evening, even though I own Salah, Hazard and Morata respectively.

For me, the opportunity to captain Kane against a team who have just lost 0-2 away to Huddersfield and then 1-5 away to Liverpool in Gameweek 16, seems too good to be true.

Sure, we’ve all been down this road before and he’s fired blanks against Watford and Palace in recent weeks, but we have to take the rough with the smooth – like we do with Hazard, Aguero, Salah et al.

Kane has delivered 4 goals and 4 bonus points in his last 4 Premier League outings for Spurs and with a perfect match-up awaiting him in Gameweek 17, the gut-feeling is strong and healthy returns are expected.

When you see returns of 15, 16, 13 and 11 in 4 of his last 6 Premier League outings for Liverpool, you seriously have to ask yourself – “why am I not captaining this man each and every week, without failure?”

Well, whilst he’s the most owned player on the official Fantasy Premier League game (55.5%), as an FPL manager myself, I tend to play with a ‘damage limitation’ mindset.

Currently, around 25% of you who have voted on our Gameweek 17 Captains Poll have gone for Salah, whilst 50%+ have opted for Kane, which does open up a massive differential captaincy opportunity for those looking to go against the masses.

Up next for Salah and Co. is a visit from a West Brom side that’s struggling for both goals and wins of late, scoring just 3 goals in their last 6 games, whilst drawing 3 of their last 4.

Scoring 17 goals in their last 5 games in all competitions, Liverpool are without doubt one of the most attacking and exciting (attacking) teams to watch in European football right now, with Mo Salah raising the bar each week as Liverpool continue to score goals- and lots of them.

I don’t have one single reason to give anyone who asks why I haven’t captained Salah this week, as I’d bet good money on the Egyptian returning his 5th double-digit points haul in 7 games – but I refuse to ignore my gut feeling (Kane)

Captain Salah with confidence in Gameweek 17 and let the good times continue if looking to go against the Kane masses.

Eden Hazard vs. Huddersfield (A)

Whilst Eden Hazard frustrated many of us in Gameweek 17 (including myself), I for one did not see that result against West Ham coming – did you?

A tired, poor performance from Chelsea against the Hammers ended in a 1-0 loss for Conte and Co. and with Hazard struggling to get involved, those who captained him were left with just 4 measly FPL points.

In today’s (Monday’s) press conference, Conte said: “A lot of players are playing a lot of games – that means someone is a bit tired. I have to find the best solution and not to lose the balance.”

Does this mean Morata is likely to be given a rest, with Hazard to play up top? I wouldn’t bet against it, yet the fear of possible rotation and limited game-time wouldn’t stop me captaining Hazard in Gameweek 17, that’s for sure.

Hazard has produced 3 double-digit point hauls of 11, 18 and 15 in the last 7 gameweeks and will now face a Huddersfield team that has conceded 13 goals in their last 5 Premier League games.

The stage is set for Hazard to go big again, so long as Chelsea don’t produce another slow, sloppy performance like they did in Gameweek 16 against the mighty Hammers.

The Gamble

Philippe Coutinho vs. West Brom (H)

I’m not a huge fan of picking two players from the same team in a captaincy picks article, as there’s never usually enough points to go around – however, with the way Liverpool are playing and scoring for fun these days, it feels right to do so this week.

The early warning signs were there back in Gameweek 12, when Coutinho turned on the charm in a 3-0 home win against Southampton, as the Brazilian bagged 1 goal, 1 assist and 2 bonus points.

Since then, Couthino has delivered only 1 memorable gameweek of solid returns (18) and that came against Brighton in Gameweek 15 – scoring once, providing 3 assists and collected all 3 bonus points for his efforts.

Coutinho will be well rested going in to Gameweek 17 against West Brom, as Klopp bravely left him out of the starting 11 against Everton in the Merseyside Derby, giving him a 12-minute run-out in place of Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Owned by only 10.9% of FPL bosses at the time of publishing this article, Philippe Coutinho offers a huge ceiling this week and an opportunity for fantasy bosses to go against the grain, knowing he’s recently bagged healthy double-digit returns.
