Tottenham’s Harry Kane looks a captaincy favourite for Gameweek 24, leaving Sergio Aguero as a huge differential

daily fantasy football tips - gameweek 24

With a handful of viable captaincy selections on offer for Gameweek 24, it’s a tough week for those of us who own the likes of Kane, Aguero and Salah.

Spoilt for choice, I’ve decided to put my top 3 picks in order of personal preference this week, with a captaincy gamble option for those of you looking to go against the grain.

As always, I wish you all the very best for Gameweek 24 and if you’ve any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me via @FFPundits_Drew on Twitter.

Pick 1

Harry Kane vs. Southampton (A)

I backed him as my number 1 captain pick last week and he duly delivered as he bagged 2 goals and 3 bonus points, leaving the Spurs striker on 13 points for Gameweek 23 – 26 points as captain.

Unfortunately, last Friday afternoon, I decided Jesse Lingard was worth a gamble as captain in my own FPL team and when Monday night arrived, I was left frustrated.

Well, this week, I will not be making that mistake again and my captaincy pick is now locked in firmly on Harry Kane and that’s where it’s staying.

For Sunday’s only Premier League fixture, Spurs travel South to face a Southampton that have conceded 9 goals in their last 5 games, which for Kane owners, is music to our ears.

Of those 9 games, one was the reverse fixture on Boxing Day, when Spurs beat The Saints 5-2 and Kane bagged the first of his two hat-tricks in two games.

Now owned by 48%+ of FPL bosses and having reached £13m in value, the #KaneExit’ers have either found a way to get Harry back, or are rapidly trying to do so.

Kane has the form – he has the fixture and although other premium FPL assets have caught my eye this week, I’ll be locking Kane in as my captain today and won’t think twice about changing my mind.

Pick 2

Mohamed Salah vs. Swansea (A)

If Kane has the form and the fixture, then this week is an easy decision isn’t it?

Unfortunately, no, as Fantasy Premier League is rarely that straight forward for FPL bosses, is it?

Over the last 6 Gameweeks, Mo Salah has provided 52 points to Kane’s 51, despite Salah missing 1 Gameweek through injury.

So why is Kane my number 1 this week?  Well, this was not an easy one, but I have gone with my gut and with the player who I feel is the more explosive, rather than making a stats-based decision.

Salah is still no slouch when it comes to hitting double figure FPL points himself and having blanked only 5 times all season, could be regarded as a safer option than Kane.

The comparisons between the two don’t get any easier when we look at the Salah’s opposition, Swansea, who similar to Southampton, have conceded 10 goals in their last 5 Premier League outings and lost the reverse fixture on Boxing Day 5-0 to Liverpool, where Salah produced 2 assists.

With 53.7% of FPL managers now owning the £10.2m midfielder, he starts to become a player you want to blank if you haven’t captained him, yet if he records his 11th double-digit point haul this week and you have the armband elsewhere, then red arrows may be your reward. Fine margins!

By choosing to give that armband to Salah you should expect to reap the rewards; especially if his recent form and FPL point returns are anything to go by.

I am certainly glad to see both Salah and Kane in my starting 11 this week and welcome the weekly headache and debate I have with myself each week when trying to decide which to captain.

Pick 3

Sergio Agüero vs. Newcastle (H)

We are spoilt for choice this week aren’t we, as the big players with favourable fixtures just keep on coming.

Still an FPL legend, all be it (in my opinion) not as explosive as Salah or Kane right now, a home fixture vs. Newcastle is a tempting one on paper and past results – especially with Aguero nailed on to start with Gabriel Jesus still out injured.

We can all remember this fixture from the 2015/16 season when Aguero bagged 5 goals in 20 minutes – a game I was fortunate enough to have the Argentine as my captain, but can lightning strike twice?

Only owned by 23% of FPL bosses and likely to be third favourite behind Kane and Salah, I still find it hard to believe that Aguero is a captaincy differential for Gameweek 24 – but that’s exactly what he is.

If you own him and are willing to risk Kane and Salah blanking or, believe Aguero has the fixture and higher ceiling to deliver healthier returns over those two, then Aguero has the potential to fire you up the rankings this weekend.

The Gamble

Riyad Mahrez vs. Watford (H)

Is that Mahrez price-tag still elevated from that 2015-16 title-winning season? Maybe that is a reason we find his ownership to be as low as 12.4%, even though his form of late has has outshone some higher priced midfielders.

I see people tweeting that their problem with Mahrez is that his points per million are lower than the likes of Doucoure and Richarlison – naturally, FPL bosses are protecting their precious budget by choosing the cheaper alternative but, that doesn’t mean I agree with their reasoning.

With 5 FPL returns (2 goals 3 assists) in his last 5 league games, he is in great form and with a sea of green fixtures stretching to the end of the season – this could be the ideal time to bring the 2015-16 player of the year into your squad.

Saturday’s opponents, Watford, continue to leak goals at the back (13 in their last 6 games) and I expect Mahrez to take advantage and continue his good form.

The gamble here isn’t so much on whether or not Mahrez will perform, but will he outperform Kane and Salah?
