FPL Captain Picks & Tips: Gameweek 27

Follow the form with Liverpool’s Mo Salah, or take a punt on Man United Alexis Sanchez as captain for Gameweek 27?

My Little Nuts - Draft Fantasy Premier League Football

It’s that time of the week again where FPL bosses scramble and struggle to decide on which of their top FPL assets will wear their precious captains armband in Gameweek 27.

With many of us still owning the likes of Salah, Kane and Aguero, the weekly captaincy selection has become nothing more than a lottery pick – which sadly, due to the small margins in FPL these days, can make or break your Gameweek.

For me personally, and like I have done over the last few editions of our weekly Captain Picks article, I’ve began to focus less on stats and form, and more on gut-instinct and the candidates fixture.

This week, I have taken the top 3 captaincy candidates from our Gameweek 27 Captain’s Poll and placed them in order of my personal preference and given reasons why, which I hope will give you food for thought when making your selections.

As always, I wish you all the very best for Gameweek 27 and if you’ve any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me via @FFPundits_Drew on Twitter before Saturday’s 11:30am deadline.

Pick 1

Mohamed Salah vs. Southampton (A)

Is it about time we started ignoring fixtures and just handed Mo Salah the captain’s armband every week? He has after all been in blistering form all season.

The Egyptian has blanked on only 6 occasions in the league since signing for Liverpool and last week, at home to Spurs, he netted twice, as well as taking home all 3 bonus points, delivering 15 points total for the Gameweek.

Despite having the highest player ownership on FPL (56.9%) and proving his reliability, he is arguably under-captained most Gameweeks, but will this week’s fixture against Southampton tempt more of you to back him?

Southampton have found their shooting boots of late and are now undefeated in their last 4 league games, although none of us signed Salah for his clean sheet points.

In the reverse fixture back in Gameweek 12, Liverpool ran out 3-0 winners, with Salah bagging 2 goals as well as maximum bonus points.

Looking at my own team, Salah seems to make the most sense this week, having lost out again in Gameweek 26 by placing the armband elsewhere and don’t want to make the same mistake again.

If you own Salah and don’t captain him, you need him to blank or else your overall rank will most likely be hurt, so should you therefore captain him every week and save yourself of the weekly headache?

Pick 2

Sergio Aguero vs. Leicester (H)

It has felt like a long few weeks as an FPL manager without Aguero in my line-up and I’ll be honest, it was a relief to see him blank against Burnley last weekend.

Well, this week I could again be looking to fellow Agueroless @FPLConnect to see if he still has room behind that sofa.

I hate not owning Aguero and being able to practice what I preach in these captaincy articles, but I have missed the boat and the way I see it is as having one more week to survive before his fixtures turn south.

In Gameweek 27, however, Manchester City host Leicester City – a team who look shaken since Mahrez went AWOL due to deadline day interest from City.

Sure, Jamie Vardy continues to play his part for the Foxes, but I fear they are there for the taking on Saturday evening, with City’s fire-power likely to cause havoc.

I am convinced Aguero is a fantastic captain option once again on paper this week, but can you see him outscoring Mohamed Salah?

That’s a question for those of you who own the pair to think about.

I will continue to plead ignorance that the Argentine even exists until my twitter feed it filled with “Aguerooooooooooooo” and my live rank on fantasyfootballfix.com plummets like a stone in water.

Pick 3

Harry Kane vs. Arsenal (H)

Was it a penalty? As a Kane owner, I didn’t really care – he bagged me a crucial 4 points. All I cared about was the one he sadly missed from the penalty spot earlier in the game!

During Gameweek 27, Tottenham complete their tricky run of fixtures with a home tie against North London rivals, Arsenal.

So far, those who have taken part in #KaneExit part 2 will be pleased – a blank and a penalty miss showed that the FPL Gods are looking down on them this time, but will that change this weekend?

As a Kane owner, what I want to know is, where have the hat-tricks gone Sir Harold?

Personally, I thought he was unlucky not to score 3 versus Manchester United in Gameweek 25 – and had he scored that first penalty against Liverpool, then it would be the #KaneRemain group with smiles on their faces.

Well, the derby feels like it’s set up nicely for Kane to repay his faithful owners, as Arsenal go into the game off the back of a 5-1 win – once again unable to keep a clean-sheet.

Kane is reliving the past by stating that being dropped by Arsenal as an 8-year-old was the best thing that ever happened to him.

I am expecting goals in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off and with Kane’s past form in this fixture, I see him being heavily involved as usual.

Even after blanking in the reverse fixture back in November, Kane still has a record of 6 goals in 7 games against Arsenal – a record I expect him to improve on in Gameweek 27.

Would I captain him over Salah this week? Probably not, but I am certainly pleased he is still part of my line-up this week and welcome such a captaincy headache each week.

The Gamble

Alexis Sánchez vs. Newcastle (A)

My head is saying captain Salah, but my heart is aching for me to captain this man again for the second week running.

So, it didn’t work out the way I hoped last week guys – I knew the risks after Liverpool struggled to break Huddersfield down the week before, but the lure of Sanchez captain against a side leaking goals and losing games was just too much.

He did of course score a goal; all be it from the rebound of a missed penalty and that penalty miss not only cost his owners 2 points, but with it any chance of getting near those well-needed bonus points.

Newcastle haven’t kept a clean-sheet since their New Year’s Day win over Stoke, although the 3-1 defeat to Manchester City really showed how they can be opened up, allowing 21 shots on goal including 13 from inside the box.

At only 5% ownership, owning Sanchez is a massive differential alone – however, by captaining him, you have an opportunity to leap up the rankings, IF he delivers.

So, do I follow my head or my heart, play it safe, or go for the differential?

This will most likely be a late decision which will go right down to the 11:29am wire on Saturday morning but I will try to go with my gut, which currently says… SANCHEZ!
