Gameweek 7: FPL Team Selection - FIRMINO to VARDY?

11:27pm Sep 26 2017

The @_FPLTips team are tempted to ditch Firmino for Vardy,  but will they pull the trigger for Gameweek 7?

Liverpool’s number 9, Bobby Firmino has now gone 3 Premier League games without a goal, assist or a single bonus point, but would now be the wrong time to sell as Mané returns from his 3-match suspension?

As always, we invite you to read the article and then check out the YouTube video below for all the stats and glossy graphics which help support our Gameweek 7 picks and findings.

With a home fixture against Watford coming up for West Brom, Ben Foster returns between the sticks.

West Brom have conceded 6 ‘big chances’ this season; only Spurs (5), Man City (5) and Chelsea (4) have conceded fewer.

In defence, Cedric Soares returns, ahead of Southampton’s away trip to Stoke; replacing Ciaran Clark.

Saints have kept clean sheets in both of their away fixtures so far, keeping out Huddersfield and Crystal Palace.

Phil Jones and Ben Mee keep their places in the starting lineup, ahead of fixtures against Crystal Palace and Everton.

Manchester United kept their 5th clean sheet of the season last Gameweek, which is more than any other Premier League team have managed.

Burnley have conceded just 1 goal in each of their last 2 away games, against Liverpool and Spurs. Everton have produced a tally of 12 shots on target this season; only Swansea (10) have taken fewer.

The midfield is unchanged for now, although there is a decision to be made concerning who to play from Tom Carroll and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

The Crystal Palace midfielder struck the post against Man City last Gameweek and has looked impressive generally this season, despite his team’s poor start.

Tom Carroll has been taking corners for Swansea and has produced 9 attempted assists this season, but his teammates have failed to convert the chances.

With a slightly easier fixture, on paper, it will most likely be the Swansea man who gets the nod.

Christian Eriksen is currently a doubt for Spurs after being ruled out of their midweek Champions League game through illness.

It’s likely that he’ll recover for the weekend but with 2 FTs saved, he’s a player we’re keeping an eye on.

The final two places in midfield go to Henrikh Mkhitaryan, ahead of Manchester United’s home fixture against Crystal Palace, and Mohamed Salah, as Liverpool travel to Newcastle.

This week, the main decision upfront is whether or not to keep faith with Roberto Firmino, after 3 consecutive blanks.

In his defence, the Man City game was a write-off, after Sadio Mané’s red card and Liverpool were always likely to miss Mané against a team like Burnley, who defend deep with lots of men behind the ball.

Liverpool should have a full-strength team for their trip to Newcastle this weekend, with Mané slotting back in on the wing and Coutinho moving to a deeper midfield role, where he can be even more creative.

So those are the reasons to keep Roberto Firmino, but with form and fixtures on his side, Jamie Vardy presents a tempting alternative.

The Leicester City forward has bagged 5 goals in 6 games and will take on Bournemouth next, as their strong run of fixtures begin.

With midweek fixtures to come, no transfers have been made yet but we’ll be looking to use at least 1 of the 2 FTs before the deadline, so make sure you follow FPLtips on Twitter, to be notified of any changes.

Elsewhere up front, Romelu Lukaku and Harry Kane will keep their places, ahead of fixtures against Crystal Palace at home and Huddersfield away.

Captaincy Thoughts

Captaincy for Gameweek 7 will be between the two big hitters up front once again.

Harry Kane has found the back of the net twice in each of his last 2 away fixtures, and has had some incredible bad luck this season; striking the woodwork 5 times so far.

But Romelu Lukaku has 6 goals in 6 games for a Manchester United team that have scored 17 goals this season; only Man City have scored more.

They’ll host a Crystal Palace side that have lost all 6 games so far and were beaten 5-0 by Man City last weekend. So, for now, the armband is with the big Belgian.
