With two favourable fixtures still to come for Manchester City, should FPL bosses keep a hold of Nicolas Otamendi?
This week, we welcome @ohheyystranger and his new weekly article called ‘The FPL Hotshot and Stray Shot’ to the Fantasy Football Pundits.
This is a new article which looks at one selected player in form, and another who has flattered to deceive, to potentially hold, sell or avoid.
UPDATE: At the time of writing, Chris Wood’s availability doubts were not made known. The Burnley striker is now flagged with 75% chance of playing, due to a hamstring injury.
Chris Wood – Burnley
£6.2m | 1.4% owned | previous fixture – 1 goal vs LEI (A)
Chris Wood scored his fourth goal of the season last weekend against Leicester, putting him level on goals with fellow striker and early season FPL darling, Ashley Barnes.
He has now scored four in his last four, averaging 6.75 FPL points a game, taking him above Barnes in overall FPL points.
The striker attempted 5 shots at goal, with 3 of those on target against Leicester in Gameweek 10. A second goal was also ruled out by VAR ten minutes from time for a perceived foul on Jonny Evans.
This season, Wood has registered goal-returns of 22.2% from a total of 18 shots – not a bad return considering both Tammy Abraham and Sergio Aguero converted 26.7% from 30 shots, respectively.
The Burnley man is likely to be a reliable budget option (1.4% ownership) to have as a 2nd or more likely 3rd striker at his price range, with a home fixture against Chelsea next, a team that has yet to keep a clean sheet on the road.
Burnley’s next 5 fixtures are: Chelsea (H), Sheffield United (A), West Ham (H), Watford (A) and Crystal Palace (H).
> Verdict: Buy
Nicolas Otamendi – Man City
£5.6m | 7.4% owned | previous fixture 0 minutes vs. Crystal Palace (A)
Nicolas Otamendi missed out on a clean sheet last week against Crystal Palace, much to the disappointment of around 7% of FPL managers.
The Argentinian picked up a knock whilst away on international duty and was left out of the national team’s second fixture against Ecuador, but the injury is not thought to be serious.
With John Stones now fit, Otamendi’s place in the starting 11 may not be guaranteed, and Fantasy Premier League bosses have now began to shun him from their lineups ahead of Gameweek 10.
However, Rodri, the defensive midfielder who was Otamendi’s replacement at the weekend, succumbed to a hamstring injury against Atalanta in the Champions League last night, suggesting, maybe, that Otamendi could still be in for a shout this week.
Although he has not looked solid for City, he remains a potent attacking threat from David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne set-pieces in the opponents area.
With two attractive home fixtures on paper to come in Gameweek’s 10 and 11 for Manchester City, I strongly recommend that the 7.4% of FPL bosses who own him, hold on to him – but make sure you have a solid first sub, just in case.
Manchester City’s next 5 fixtures are: Aston Villa (H), Southampton (H), Liverpool (A), Chelsea (H) and Newcastle (A).
> Verdict: Hold
