Paul Pogba – Man United [£8.0m]
France international, Paul Pogba, is proving to be a popular option this season; the 4th most selected midfielder in the game, behind only Dele Alli, Philippe Coutinho and Wilfried Zaha.
Whilst Pogba provided a fairly average tally of 5 goals and 4 assists last season, his 57 attempted assists, 32 shots on targetand 5 goal attempts that struck the woodwork, demonstrating his potential to comfortably outscore that tally this time around.
Pogba’s tally of 32 shots on target was level with Eden Hazard and only 6 midfielders in the game produced more; Heung-Min Son (33), Dele Alli (43), Christian Eriksen (45), Gylfi Sigurdsson (49) and Alexis Sanchez (49).
With the arrival of Romelu Lukaku and generous price of £8.0m, it’s hard to overlook the Manchester United midfielder, ahead of their kind opening fixtures.
Wilfred Zaha – Crystal Palace [£7.0m]
The Crystal Palace midfielder enjoyed a much-improved season, building on his tally of 5 assists and 2 goals from the 2015/16 season, by providing 11 assists and scoring 7 times himself, last time around; more than double his efforts in the previous campaign.
With a kind price tag of just £7.0m, Zaha provides a strong budget option to begin the season, ahead of home fixtures against Huddersfield and Swansea in the opening 3 Gameweeks.
Zaha was directly involved in 18 goals for Crystal Palace last season; more than any of his teammates, with Christian Benteke close behind. The Belgian forward contributed to 17 goals for the club, with his 15 goals and 2 assists.
Pedro – Chelsea [£8.0m]
With Eden Hazard expected to be side-lined through injury for the opening weeks of the season, there are likely to be more minutes on offer for the likes of Pedro, Willian and Fabregas, as Chelsea look to replace the Belgian’s goals and assists in midfield.
Pedro was a key part of Conte’s title-winning team last season, making 35 appearances and contributing to 19 Premier League goals, scoring 9 times himself and providing 10 assists.
Whilst Pedro’s tally of 42 attempted assists were fewer than teammates, Willian and Fabregas, the 17 shots on target managed by the Spaniard could only be beaten by Eden Hazard (33), amongst Chelsea midfielders, highlighting Pedro’s tendency to go for goal himself.
Matt Phillips – West Brom [£6.0m]
To complete our selection of midfielders to watch, we have the generously priced Matt Phillips. The West Brom midfielder comes in at just £6.0m, and will face opening fixtures against Bournemouth, Burnley, Stoke and Brighton in the first 4 Gameweeks.
The Scotland international takes a share of corners and free kicks for his team; his tally of 4 assists from set pieces was matched by Mesut Özil, Cesc Fabgregas, Philippe Coutinho and Jason Puncheon, but only Christian Eriksen (6), Kevin De Bruyne (6) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (8) provided more.
Phillips was directly involved in 13 Premier League goals last season, scoring a total of 4 goals and providing 9 assists, before picking up a long-term injury that saw him miss most of the end of the season.
