Which Liverpool players should you be owning for FPL’s Double Gameweek 24?
Hopefully you’ve enjoyed the mini-break from FPL following the busy Christmas period, but now it’s time to turn our attention to Gameweek 22 for another instalment of the Q&A series with FFPundits and FPLTips
As always, we received hundreds of fantastic questions from the FPL community, but sadly we could answer only a few of them.
Please note that all player prices and ownership percentages were correct at the time of writing and recording.
Here are some of the brilliant questions sent in to us via Twitter this week in which we’ve answered:
Subho (@92Subho) asks:
Q – “Who would you say is the best replacement for Pope (GK) please?”
The obvious option that comes to mind is Lukasz Fabianski, who has recently made a return from injury ahead of West Ham’s upcoming Double Gameweek 24.
Admittedly, the fixtures aren’t the best in the long-term but the next 4 Gameweeks see him face home ties with Everton and Brighton and the Double Gameweek potentially allows us to take more of a short-term punt.
For longer term options, Newcastle and Arsenal have very favourable fixtures between now and Gameweek 34, which is around the time a lot of managers will be looking to use their 2nd Wildcard, so Dubravka and Leno could be ones to watch.
The Arsenal goalkeeper is 2nd only to Dubravka for saves made this season (86 to 82).
Brighton’s Mat Ryan also has some handy fixtures in the medium term, up until around Gameweek 30.
Mahdi (@Mahdi77304857) asks:
Q – “Would you go with a Salah and Mané or Trent and Robertson double up for Double Gameweek 24?”
The short answer is all 4 of these options are viable and it’s largely going to depend on how your team is set up.
For example, if you’re playing 3-4-3 and you already have the popular trio of Alexander-Arnold, Söyüncü and Lundstram, bringing Robertson in would likely mean having to find funds to upgrade your 4th or 5th defender and moving to a 4-at-the-back formation.
Having both Salah and Mané is arguably the safest way to play it, purely looking at Double Gameweek 24, given that those two are sure to be highly captained and even triple captained.
So, owning them both is a way to somewhat cover yourself if the one you don’t captain happens to score significantly higher in the Double Gameweek.
Get Back In The Kitchen (@GetBackInTheKi6) asks:
Q – “Who is the best budget forward/midfielder to make way for Liverpool players please?”
As far as form picks go, around the £6.5m or below price mark, Calvert-Lewin stands out after netting 5 goals in the last 6 Gameweeks.
He ranks joint-top amongst forwards with 17 shots in the box, on par with Abraham, while only Kane and Rashford (each 11) have bettered his 10 efforts on target.
He’s also been afforded 4 big chances in that time; only behind Wood (5), McGoldrick (6) and Jesus (8) amongst forwards.
Devansh (@Devansh__Mittal) asks:
Q – “What to do with Dele Alli? Who would you look to replace him with?”
Richarlison and Maddison are the options that stand out around that price range, offering both form and favourable upcoming fixtures.
In the last 10 Gameweeks, they each rank in the top 5 for midfielders below £9.0m, returning 52 and 50 FPL points, respectively.
During that period, only Sterling (8) and Mané (10) were afforded more than Richarlison’s 6 big chances, amongst all midfielders, while only Buendía and De Bruyne (each 34) created more chances than Maddison (28).
The next 5 Gameweeks see Everton host Brighton, Newcastle and Crystal Palace, while Leicester face just two ‘top six’ sides in the next 12 Gameweeks.
Jacob (@MonreaIity) asks:
Q – “Do you plan to use any of the chips for the upcoming Double Gameweek 24? If not, do you have a rough idea of when you’ll play them?”
The Bench Boost and Free Hit chips tend to work better in bigger Double Gameweeks, that involve more than just 2 teams.
It would seem like a bit of a waste to use them in Gameweek 24, when the maximum amount of Double Gameweek players we can own is 6.
Another time the Free Hit chip can come in handy is when there’s a Blank Gameweek involving a number of teams, which is something that is likely to occur later in the season.
There’s also likely to be at least two other Double Gameweeks, later in the season, involving a greater number of teams.
Triple Captain, on the other hand, is a chip that actually lends itself to a smaller Double Gameweek in my opinion and we’ve got two very captain-able players in Salah and Mané involved in Double Gameweek 24.
So, I personally think it’s a great time to use the Triple Captain chip, providing we can be somewhat confident of them getting a good amount of gametime.
Lastly, CrazyabtFPL asks (@CrazyabtFPL):
Q: “Who are the top 3 budget defenders currently in your opinion?”
For argument’s sake, I’m going to discount the likes of Söyüncü and Lundstram, who began as budget defenders but have since enjoyed a number of price rises and I’ll instead focus on players who are currently below £4.5m.
If you’re looking for an option who can come straight into your starting XI, then Webster or Holgate could be players to consider, given the favourable fixtures that Brighton and Everton have.
Carlo Ancelotti has primarily favoured a 3-at-the-back system since his appointment and Holgate has actually gone under the radar a little bit in making 12 consecutive league starts.
Cathcart could also be a budget defender to watch, with Watford keeping clean sheets in 3 of their last 4 home matches.
Over the last 6 Gameweeks, only Liverpool have kept more clean sheets (5 to 3) or conceded fewer goals (0 to 4).
