Manchester City shot-stopper Ederson, is the most owned Goalkeeper on FPL, but which value and budget picks are also worth selecting?
So far in the ‘Players to Watch’ series, we’ve looked at potential options from the 3 newly promoted sides, Aston Villa, Sheffield United and Norwich City.
Today, it’s Goalkeepers who are going under the microscope, with premium, budget and value picks selected, ahead of the new season.
We will once again be rolling out videos, articles and social media content via our various channels – a link to each you can find below.

Premium Pick: Ederson – £6.0m
First 3 fixtures: West Ham (A), Spurs (H), Bournemouth (A)
Playing every minute of Premier League football for the Champions last season, Ederson proved to be a reliable way into a watertight Man City defence.
Only Liverpool (21) kept more than their 20 clean sheets or shipped fewer than their 23 goals conceded but no side allowed opponents fewer big chances (36) than Pep Guardiola’s men.
Whilst Alisson remains an alternative option, the array of nailed on, attack-minded Liverpool defenders are hard to overlook.
It’s a kind start to the 2019/20 season for Man City, who face just one ‘top six’ side in their first 11 matches.
The first 4 Gameweeks see them face West Ham and Bournemouth on the road, with Spurs and Brighton travelling to the Etihad and they kept 4/4 clean sheets in the respective fixtures last season.
Budget Pick: Mat Ryan – £4.5m
First 3 fixtures: Watford (A), West Ham (H), Southampton (H)
Fabianski and Foster have been promoted to the £5.0m price tag, leaving Burnley, Bournemouth, Southampton and Brighton as the only teams offering a potential £4.5m goalkeeper option.
Although Southampton kept 7 clean sheets last season, only 3 of those came since Gameweek 16, when Ralph Hasenhüttl took charge; lessening the appeal of Angus Gunn.
For the moment, Mark Travers is vying with Begovic and Boruc for a starting place at Bournemouth and it’s a similar situation for Nick Pope, who has competition from Tom Heaton at Burnley, though the latter has been linked with a potential move to Aston Villa.
With that in mind, Mat Ryan emerges as the safest goalkeeper pick to start the season, at that price point.
Although they conceded a fairly high total of 60 goals last season, ranking 14th in the league, Brighton’s underlying defensive numbers offer some promise.
Excluding the ‘top six’ teams, only Leicester (56) and Wolves (51) allowed opponents fewer ‘big chances’ than the Seagulls (69) last season.
Home fixtures against West Ham, Southampton and Burnley in the opening 5 Gameweeks are made all the more favourable, given the fact that 5 of their 7 clean sheets last season came at the Amex.
Value Pick: Jordan Pickford – £5.5m
First 3 fixtures: Wolves (H), Chelsea (A), Sheff United (A)
Offering a very respectable average of 4.2 points per game, Pickford (161) ended the season as the third-highest scoring goalkeeper, just 8 points behind Ederson (169).
This was largely down to Everton’s strong finish to the campaign, which saw them pick up 8 of their 14 clean sheets in the last 11 Gameweeks.
Their totals of 7 goals conceded and 12 big chances conceded, during that spell, were on par with Liverpool and only bettered by Man City.
The Toffees didn’t concede a single goal in any of their last 5 home matches, keeping out Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd and Burnley.
With a favourable run of fixtures to start the new season, facing just one ‘top-six’ side in the first 10 Gameweeks, Pickford could continue to keep up with Alisson and Ederson, providing Everton maintain their end of season form.
