Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah are causing a captaincy headache for FPL bosses ahead of Gameweek 20
As Harry Kane runs away with 48% of the votes in our Gameweek 20 Captains Poll, Mohamed Salah sits pretty in second place with 21% – but the question still remains; who will be YOUR Gameweek 20 captain?
With Kane fresh off the back of an impressive hat-trick in Gameweek 19 and Salah continually delivering healthy returns most weeks, is now the time to be cute and go against the grain or follow the masses?
I write this article whilst sat filling my face on Christmas Day evening, so apologies for not going in to too much detail with my weekly picks – I thought you’d appreciate a shortened version too whilst drinking and eating with your family.
As always, I wish you all the very best of luck for Gameweek 20 and hope you’re having a fantastic Christmas.
Harry Kane vs. Southampton (H)
The most important debate since the EU Referendum, do Fantasy Premier League managers continue to back Harry Kane?
Were you #KaneExit or #KaneRemain?
Those of you who stood by Harry received the ultimate reward – a Gameweek 19 hat-trick and 17 points (34 as captain).
On Boxing Day, a home fixture vs Southampton gives Tottenham and Kane the opportunity to build on that 3-0 victory at Burnley.
Southampton are now without a win from their last 6 Premier League games, conceding 10 goals during that period.
Now only 1 goal behind Lionel Messi in 2017, Kane will have his eyes set on personal achievements as well as Spurs success.
Mohamed Salah vs. Swansea (H)
Gameweek 19 resulted in the Premier Leagues leading goal scorer and Fantasy Premier Leagues leading point-scorer, finishing with yet another double-figure return.
1 goal and 1 assist for the Egyptian, rewarding Salah owners with 10 points – but no bonus points this time (outrage!)
Now priced at £10.1m and owned by 58.8% of fantasy managers, if you don’t captain Salah this week, you’ll find yourself hoping he doesn’t explode, despite owning him.
Well, for those of you who have been entrusting that armband elsewhere this season, a home match vs bottom of the table Swansea should tempt you.
Having conceded 26 goals already this season and scoring only 11 themselves, Swansea will be in for a tough evening when Liverpool visit South Wales on Tuesday evening under the floodlights.
Salah’s underlying stats continue to impress and we can expect those goals, assists and bonus points to continue for this season’s must own Fantasy Premier League player.
Raheem Sterling vs. Newcastle (A)
Fantasy Premier League bosses continue to find themselves spoilt for choice when it comes to Manchester City’s attacking assets.
Playing effectively on the right of a front 3, for me the man to own out of all Man City options is Raheem Sterling.
Off the back of 2 double-digit point returns during Gameweeks 18 and 19, Sterling is in fantastic form and shows no signs of slowing down.
7 goals, 6 assists and 11 bonus points for the season, Sterling is now only second to Mo Salah for FPL points this season, yet it still only £8.7m and 29.9% owned.
On the day after Boxing Day, Manchester City travel to Newcastle – a side who are 15th in the Premier League table, having conceded 29 goals for the season.
Newcastle recorded their first victory in 10 games during Gameweek 19 – however, they were lucky not to concede more and I expect them to struggle against a free-scoring Manchester City who’ve scored 12 in their last 3 Premier League outings.
Jesse Lingard vs. Burnley (H)
Maybe it’s the Mulled Wine talking, but this week my gamble captaincy pick is a bold one and more for those who’re so far behind, they’re looking to have a bit of fun.
Jesse Lingard is in fantastic form at the moment for United and is now a key player for Jose Mourinho it seems.
Having nailed down the number 10 role for Manchester United, he has gone on to provide 3 double-figure FPL point returns over his last 6 Premier League games.
After rounding the Kasper Schmeichel on Saturday, had he not hit the post, he’d be boasting a 4th double digit return.
With Manchester United 2-1 up and Leicester City down to 10 men, the 3 points were seemingly secure and Mourinho brought Lingard off – another sign of his importance.
Their Boxing Day opponents Burnley were missing key defensive personnel against Spurs in Gameweek 19 – something which Manchester United will also look to exploit themselves on Tuesday afternoon.
Owned by only 4.6% of FPL managers, will you trust Lingard to give you a massive differential over your rivals in Gameweek 20?
