3 differential Defenders to consider on Fantasy Premier League ahead of Gameweek 1
As mentioned in our Goalkeepers To Watch article last week, we’re all aware of who the premium, ‘must-own’ defenders will be this season, but what if you cannot afford them all, or want to go against the grain early on?
This article will focus solely on FPL Defenders, as part two of a four-part series called ‘Players to Watch – Pre Season Differentials’ and will aim to shed light on a small handful of players you may not have considered, yet.
If you’ve any feedback or wish to continue the conversation over on Twitter, be sure to drop me a follow and a message – @FFPundits_Scott
Seamus Coleman – Everton (£5.5m)
First 5 Games: Crystal Palace (A), Watford (H), Aston Villa (A), Wolves (H), Bournemouth (A)
Seamus Coleman is a fantastic right-back and has been a Fantasy Premier League favourite for many years.
Despite struggling with injuries in recent years, and after a horrific double leg break that kept him out for over 9 months in 2017, he looks to be back to his best, finishing last season strongly.
His £5.5m price tag, as well as those attractive first 5 fixtures, makes him a solid choice in your back line – it’s also worth noting that Coleman is £0.5m cheaper than the 29% owned, Lucas Digne.
Having played in only 29 of Everton’s 38 Premier League fixtures last season, Coleman still managed a return of 125 points – only 33 less than team-mate Digne, who played in 37.
If you’re struggling to find £0.5m to afford a player elsewhere in your team, I believe Coleman over Digne could be the way to go, based on last seasons FPL return from the pair.
Nathan Aké – Bournemouth (£5.0m)
First 5 Games: Sheff Utd (H), Aston Villa (A), Man City (H), Leicester (A), Everton (H)
Starting out as one of the hundreds of Chelsea loanees that seem to be out there, Aké signed permanently for Bournemouth in 2017 and hasn’t looked back.
He has arguably been the stand out defender for Bournemouth since his move – contributing to 10 clean sheets last season, as well as scoring 4 goals, 1 assist and 8 FPL bonus points.
Aké is already the most owned Bournemouth defender (15.8%) and 8th overall defender – this is likely due to attractive opening fixtures against newly promoted Sheffield United (H) and Aston Vila (A) in Gameweek’s 1 and 2.
At £5.0m, Aké is easily transferable to another defender around that price range, if the opening fixtures for Bournemouth don’t go to plan.
Patrick Van Aanholt – Crystal Palace (£5.5m)
First 5 Games: Everton (H), Sheff Utd (A), Man Utd (A), Aston Villa (H), Spurs (A)
PVA has been one of the most consistent left backs in the Premier League for years now – even when playing for a side who struggled as much as Sunderland did.
At Palace, he has averaged almost 4 points per game for the past 2 seasons, with last season being by far his best on paper.
Contributing to 12 clean sheets and making his presence felt going forward, PVA scored 3 goals, produced 2 assists and bagged an impressive 17 FPL bonus points for his efforts.
With Aaron Wan-Bissaka now at Manchester United after his huge £45m summer transfer move, Palace look extremely thin at the back and injuries to Sakho and Tomkins won’t help either.
If Palace can strengthen their back-line ahead of Gameweek 1, there’s no reason why PVA shouldn’t have another blistering FPL season.
Away trips to Manchester United and Spurs in Gameweek’s 3 and 5 are likely to keep his overall ownership under 10% before the season kicks-off, so should stay a solid differential pick.
Before you go… If you love Fantasy Premier League, and you enjoy taking part in cash leagues with friends and family, how does the chance to win a share of €250,000 sound?
That’s exactly what you can do at FanTeam.com, who are offering a quarter of a million Euro prize pool for their season-long game, which is almost identical to FPL for an entry fee of just €25!
