Shrewd Moves and Differentials - Gameweek 5

10:01am Sep 14 2016

Fear not FPL bosses, @FPLThunshot is back with his Shrewd Moves and cheeky Differentials for Gameweek 5 – Do any of these low-owned FPL picks tickle your fancy?

Romelu Lukaku and ‘Shrewd Moves’ are not a combination you’ll see often amongst the FPL community, however, as this article was written before Monday’s Sunderland vs. Everton game, we felt it was relevant to keep the big Belgian as a Differential pick for Gameweek 5 due to his teams-owned-by percentage.

Whilst Lukaku’s price and ownership are likely to rise rapidly between now and the 19:00 Gameweek 5 deadline this Friday, there are other shrewd moves and differentials out there for you to consider, so, without further ado, here are this week’s selection.

Adam Smith – Bournemouth

  • £4.6m
  • 5.5%
  • 2, 2, 11
  • Man City (A), Everton (H), Watford (A)

Smith has been one of the most attacking minded full-backs of the season. With one goal and one assist, he’s put up attacking returns characteristic of a decent midfielder. Charlie Daniels was the fullback to own last season, but Adam Smith I think is the smarter choice. At £4.5m, he’s £0.5m cheaper than Daniels and offers an equal attacking threat in my opinion.

Bournemouth fixtures are a mixed bag, with strong defences of Manchester City and Everton to come. After that, Watford and Hull in GW7 and GW8 should offer a good opportunity for a clean-sheet. I think Smith is a brilliant choice as a 4th or 5th defender and can see points to come.

Other recommended differential defenders under 10% TSB

  • Ashley Williams – Everton [£5.0m, 7.9% owned]
  • Nacho Monreal – Arsenal [£6.0m, 5.1% owned]
  • Bacary Sagna – Manchester United [£5.4m, 3.3% owned]

Santi Cazorla – Arsenal

  • £7.6m
  • 6.9%
  • 3, 9, 9
  • Hull City (A), Chelsea (H), Burnley (A)

Santi has been a magician in Arsenal’s midfield for both club and FPL this season. With Aaron Ramsey’s injury, Santi Cazorla slotted straight into the side and hasn’t stopped performing since.

He’s a clinician from set-pieces and has taken much of the set-piece duty away from Mesut Ozil. He’s also the Arsenal penalty taker and has scored two penalties in his last two games.

Arsenal also have an excellent run of fixtures: Hull, Burnley, Swansea, Middlesbrough, and Sunderland in their next 6 games. With the new officiating standards tending towards more penalties being called, I think Santi offers unrivaled value at only £7.6m.

I believe that Cazorla will continue to make it in to Wenger’s starting XI, even when Ramsey is fit because of his performances. He’s a good buy for the coming weeks and is an extremely cheap way in to an aggressive Arsenal midfield.

Other recommended differential midfielders under 10% TSB

  • Roberto Firmino – Liverpool [£8.4m, 8.4% owned]
  • Willian – Chelsea [£7.4m, 7.3% owned]
  • Kevin De Bruyne– Manchester City [£10.5m, 6.8% owned]

Romelu Lukaku – Everton

  • £9.1m
  • 11.6%
  • 1, 2, 17
  • Middlesbrough (H), Bournemouth (A), Crystal Palace (H)

Romelu Lukaku is the first repeat differential of the 2016/17 FPL season and he’s also the first player to net a hat-trick. He won’t be a differential under 10% ownership for much longer given his Monday night performance, but now is the time to buy as his price will only rise from here on out.

Lukaku has always been a player to score in bunches. He scored a brace for Belgium over the International Break and followed it up with a 17 point hat-trick (including 3 bonus points) against Sunderland.

Everton have great fixtures in the weeks to come. I think Lukaku is the absolute best forward buy in FPL if you don’t already own him. Get on the bandwagon while he’s still a differential!

Other recommended differential forwards under 10% TSB

  • Christian Benteke – Crystal Palace [£7.5m, 5.2% owned]
  • Odion Ighalo – Watford [£7.3m, 5.5% owned]
  • Kelechi Iheanacho – Manchester City [£6.9m, 3.5% owned] (only recommended if Wildcarding in GW6)
