The 2022 World Cup in Qatar is set to be a ground-breaking World Cup. Not only is it the first time it’s being hosted in the middle-east, but the intense heat means it is scheduled for November and December, as opposed to June and July.
It’s going to be a controversial competition, but it’s still the FIFA World Cup and so it will still attract a huge number of spectators, not to mention lots of televised games and online sports betting opportunities.
In the last World Cup, we saw Kylian Mbappe announce himself on the world stage, but which players will be the stars of the 2022 World Cup?
Trent Alexander-Arnold
Trent Alexander-Arnold is probably the best right-back in the world right now and he has been for a couple of years. Injuries prevented him from showcasing his talents at the European Championships and, at the 2018 World Cup, he was just a fresh-faced 19-year-old with a single cap.
2022 could be his year. He’s coming off the back of some blistering form for Liverpool and his speed, crossing, and set-pieces are a match for any defense.
If he stays fit before and during the World Cup, Trent Alexander-Arnold should be a dead-cert for inclusion in the team of the tournament. Of course, he’ll also be competing against top right-backs like Trippier and Sancho, but an in-form Alexander-Arnold will always be picked first.
Phil Foden
Phil Foden is a talented young Man City midfielder. He is technically gifted and possesses a wealth of talent. More importantly, he’s consistent, and that’s something you can’t say about a lot of young talent.
The Englishman will be one of the first names on England’s team sheet and will be asked to link up with the likes of Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling. Expect to see his name in the Team of the Tournament.
Kai Havertz
Kai Havertz is a young German attacking midfield who plies his trade for Chelsea in the English Premier League, a team that paid nearly $90 million for his services. He has already notched a hatful of goals for his national team and has won plenty of praise in the EPL, as well. We’ve yet to see the best of him, but that could change by the end of 2022.
If Havertz takes some good form into the tournament and hits the ground running, he could help Germany to regain some lost glory.
Pedri
Spain has a few top young players and a very competitive squad. But the thing that made the Spain of the early 2000s so great were the creators, not the goalscorers. It was all about Xavi, Iniesta, Raul, and Fabregas, and Pedri is the man who could bring that era back.
The Barcelona midfielder has been capped just 10 times for Spain so far, but he is already being compared to Iniesta and Co. He is one of the world’s best young playmakers and could be instrumental in helping Spain compete for global glory in Qatar.
Summary: Players to Watch in 2022
In addition to all of the young players above, the 2022 World Cup should see many top players hit the peak of their powers, including Harry Kane, Kevin de Bruyne, Neymar, and Virgil van Dijk. These players are why the world loves soccer and why everyone is looking forward to 2022 in Qatar!
