As Christmas approaches, the festive football schedule means there’s plenty to play for when it comes to the Fantasy Premier League. Here’s how the Pundits’ Team is shaping up ahead of Gameweek 17

Last time out – Gameweek 16

Last week we made just the one transfer to bring in Harry Kane for his plum fixture at home to Newcastle, while Sergio Aguero was still out injured. Unfortunately, this didn’t quite go to plan for all the Fantasy Premier League managers who had captained the Englishman expecting a big haul as he completely blanked. We still managed a decent enough gameweek score of 61 as Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy both scored as Leicester put Chelsea (and Jose Mourinho) to the sword on Monday night.

Mahrez, the game’s highest scorer so far this season, also picked up an assist and 3 bonus points to bring home yet another double digit haul. Romelu Lukaku and Mesut Ozil also delivered thei customary goal and assist respectively, while Jack Butland managed yet another spectacular haul for a goalkeeper as he netted 11 points, including 3 bonus points. A clean sheet for Aaron Cresswell and an assist for Gerard Deulofeu completed the points.

This week – Gameweek 17

Gameweek 17 Transfers

Although our squad is far from perfect – Kyle Naughton, Nathan Redmond and Alex McCarthy all need to go – we’ve decided to save a transfer this week for a number of reasons. It’s important to have a strong FPL squad over Christmas time, given the number of games and how thick and fact they come around. With a number of big players due to return from injury around this time such as Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez, saving a transfer allows us an extra week to weigh up these options and whether we want to get them in our squad.

We have no pressing concerns with regards to our starting XI, while we also have a decent first sub too. The squad should easily see us through this weekend and once we reach Boxing Day, we’ll have the luxury of an extra free transfer to play with as we look to take advantage of the festive fixtures.

Captaincy Pick – Romelu Lukaku

The main contenders this week are all taking part in the game at Goodison Park, as Everton host Leicester City in an encounter which promises to be open, attacking and full of goals. Leicester are missing Danny Drinkwater and more importantly, Robert Huth. These two will be a huge miss for Leicester right down the defensive spine of their team, and one which Everton and Lukaku will look to exploit. Everton themselves however have been far from great defensively this season, and Vardy & Mahrez will fancy their chances of picking up plenty of points on Merseyside.

Mahrez in particular is in sensational form, especially away from home as he netted a hat-trick away at Swansea the last time Swansea were on the road. We’ve opted for Everton’s in-form Belgian however, he’s chasing Jamie Vardy’s record of scoring in 11 consecutive Premier League games, albeit that he’s some distance away from it at the moment, it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility given the way this season has panned out so far. If he gets one step closer on Saturday though it will make a lovely early Christmas present for us and plenty of other FPL managers.

Finally, all of us here at Fantasy Football Pundits would like to wish you a Merry Christmas, and we hope that Santa brings you those green arrows you so desperately crave.
