Before we begin, we would like to point out that this piece is written and produced based on the results of a live Twitter Poll, where you, the public, have voted in your thousands.
Hopefully, next week, when we have data from the Gameweek 1 fixtures to work with, we can look to identify some solid FPL captain picks and tips for you to consider ahead of Gameweek 2.
If you’d like to cast your vote on our Fantasy Premier League Captains Poll, the link will be available for you at the end of the article.
As things stand at the time of writing and recording, here are the results of our Gameweek 1 Captains Poll in both video and article format. Enjoy!
BEFORE YOU CONTINUE… As things stand, only 2000 FPL bosses have entered FanTeam’s £250,000 cash league, yet the top 1250 are paid out… if you’ve thought about entering and haven’t yet done so, what on earth are you waiting for? Now’s the time! [click banner below for info]
3. Raheem Sterling – Manchester City
vs. West Ham (A) | £12.0m | 30% owned
With around 10% of the vote, Raheem Sterling comes in at number 3.
17 goals and 15 assists last season saw the England international achieve an impressive average of 6.9 points per game throughout the campaign.
His goal during Man City’s Community Shield win over Liverpool capped off an impressive pre-season for the 24-year-old, where he racked up 5 goals and 2 assists in 5 appearances.
The champions travel to West Ham on opening weekend, having scored 4 goals in each of their 3 previous away meetings with the Hammers in the Premier League, while conceding just once.
2. Harry Kane – Spurs
vs. Aston Villa (A) | £11.0m | 28.2% owned
Harry Kane sits in 2nd place, receiving around 19% of the vote.
The England captain averaged 5.7 points per game last season; only bettered by Aguero, amongst FPL forwards.
This increases to 6.7 PPG, if we disregard matches against the ‘top six’ teams, and 8.3 PPG, if we just include the ‘bottom six’ teams (last season); highlighting his appeal against lower table opposition.
Spurs kick off their 2019/20 campaign by hosting Aston Villa, who kept the fewest clean sheets last season (12) amongst the 3 promoted teams.
1. Mohamed Salah
vs. Norwich (H) | £12.5m | 37.6% owned
With an overwhelming 68% of the vote, as things stand, Mo Salah comfortably tops the Gameweek 1 captaincy poll.
The Egyptian looked lively against Man City in the Community Shield, seeing what looked to be a certain goal denied by an incredible off-the line clearance from Kyle Walker.
He took a total of 10 goal attempts during the game, including two efforts against the woodwork.
Last season, the second-time top FPL points scorer achieved an average of 10.5 points per game during home matches against the ‘bottom six’ teams, and an incredible 14.0 PPG against the now relegated trio of Cardiff, Fulham and Huddersfield, at home.
The Reds welcome newly promoted Norwich to Anfield on Friday, a side praised for their attack-minded style of football during their title winning campaign.
The Canaries kept 13 clean sheets in 46 league matches; just 1 more than Aston Villa managed.
