Coming into the 2017/18 Champions League off the back of last year’s triumph, Real Madrid will be looking to become the first club to win the Champions League for the third year running.

They come into this year’s competition as the bookies favourites and rightly so.

Star Man –  Cristiano Ronaldo

Ronaldo is without a doubt Real’s star man having scored 10+ goals in the competition for the last 6 years. Notably he scored 12 goals and registered 6 assists in 13 games in last year’s Champions League, an outstanding record that he will no doubt want to better this year.

One to watch – Marco Asensio (UPDATE: will miss Week 1 through illness)

At an astonishing £7.5m Asensio is certainly one to watch in the Real Madrid side. After just 5 games so far in the 17/18 season Asensio has scored 4 goals including 2 against Barcelona. Asensio will be looking to add to his tally of goals in big games when comes up against sides such as Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham.

Predicted Lineup: Navas; Daniel Carvajal, Ramos, Nacho, Marcelo; Modric, Casemiro, Kroos; Isco, Ronaldo, Bale.

Dortmund enter this year’s Champions League as 2nd seed after a disappointing season in the Bundesliga last season which saw them finish 3rd place as they never managed to challenge Bayern for the title.

Two games into the new season and Dortmund look a rejuvenated side with 2 wins from 2 under their new boss Peter Bosz.

Star Man – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (PEA)

After missing out on a move to one of the top teams in Europe PEA will be looking to get himself amongst the goals on the big stage.

Last season’s champions league saw him score 7 goals and register 1 assist in 9 appearances, a record not to be frowned upon.

Having started brightly in this seasons Bundesliga as well PEA has already scored 2 goals in 2 games.

Despite Dortmund’s tough group stage fixtures, I’m certain he will be among the goals.

One to Watch – Andrey Yarmolenko

The Ukrainian right-winger joined Dortmund this summer from Dynamo Kiev after years of being linked to big clubs.

He has an impressive record for the Ukrainian side and especially so last season as he was involved in 29 goals in 36 appearances scoring 19 and assisting 10.

Now that he will be playing alongside players or superior quality to those of his Dynamo teammates he should be in a great position to improve on his stats from Ukraine.

Predicted Lineup: Weidenfeller; Toljan, Sokratis, Toprak, Piszczek; Sahin, Kagawa, Pulisic, Castro, Gotze; Aubameyang.

Tottenham Hotspur

After an extremely disappointing Champions League campaign last time out Spurs will be looking to prove everyone wrong and put on a show at Wembley.

Although I feel with the unfortunate draw they were dealt in the group stages and the lack of squad depth they have they will struggle to get out of the group once again this year.

Star Man – Harry Kane

If Spurs are going to score goals in the Champions League they are going to come from this man. T

There is no denying Kane’s goal scoring record in England is outstanding but it’s time for him to prove himself in Europe.

There’s no better way to prove yourself in the Champions League than scoring against the likes of Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund so expect Kane to bag a couple of goals in the group stages with 2 ties’ against Apoel Nicosia as well.

One to Watch – Christian Eriksen

Eriksen’s set-pieces are unrivalled on the main stage and he has proved so on international duty with Denmark and in the premier league also.

His delivery from open play is hugely under rated and he will certainly be causing defences problems in the Champions League with the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli on the end of his crosses.

Predicted Lineup: Lloris; Vertonghen, Sanchez, Alderweireld, Davies, Aurier; Dembele, Dier, Eriksen, Son; Kane.

Apoel Nicosia

Apoel Nicosia enter the competition as Cyprus champions and have their eyes firmly set on 6 massive games for their club.

As a result of being 4th seed in the draw Apoel got dropped into what is arguably the group of death in this year’s Champions League.

To be blunt about it I don’t see them registering more than 1 point in this year’s competition but you can be sure they will give 100% in every game to give their supporters something to cheer for.

Star Man – Igor de Camargo

The Belgian centre forward has shown potential in the competition already this season after scoring 3 goals in 6 games in Champions League qualification which saw Apoel secure their spot in this year’s competition.

The veteran striker will be looking to lead from the front in such big games for his club and will look to impress in the likes of the Bernabeu and Wembley stadium.

One to Watch – Efstathios Aloneftis

Aloneftis is another veteran that had a positive start to the season during Champions League qualification as he bagged himself a goal and assist in just 199mins of football.

It will take a lot of determination and luck to score past the likes of Hugo Lloris and Keylor Navas though so expect Apoel to struggle in front of goal.

Predicted Lineup: Waterman; Milanov, Rueda, Carlao, Lago; Sallai, Vinicius, Morais, Aloneftis; de Camargo, Ebecilio.
